On March 18, 2025, Korea Customs Service (KCS) announced a tough crackdown on illegal drugs disguised as medicines like cold remedies and sleeping pills!
Over the past five years, drug offenders caught by customs surged from 594 (148kg) in 2020 to 800 (787kg) last year—a 1.3x increase in cases and 5.3x in weight.
Illegal medicines with narcotics? From 19 offenders (885g) in 2020 to 252 (37,688g) last year—13x more cases, 43x more weight! The trend’s only getting steeper this year.
Key substances include codeine, dextromethorphan (cold meds), alprazolam, and zolpidem (sleep aids)—4 of the top 10 account for 82% of 292 cases last year.
Nationalities? South Korea (34%), Vietnam, Sri Lanka lead, making up 87% of busts. Locals use travel and mail, foreigners favor express cargo and post.
Why the rise? Some buy for pain relief, unaware of narcotic content; others abuse them as drug substitutes. KCS warns: “Ignorance won’t save you from penalties—or addiction!” Check ingredients before buying overseas!
